St John's Infant School
St John’s is a popular Church of England Infant school in the centre of Churt with a one-form entry and capacity for 90 children ranging from 4-7 years, accepting up to 30 children into each year group. Staff and governors work together to create a warm, happy, stimulating and caring environment in which the children can grow and develop.
The school believes in a child-centred education, where children can access an exciting and varied curriculum, learning to become increasingly independent and resilient and showing a genuine love of learning. The school values underpin all that they do, with each child treasured and loved as an individual, so they can let their light shine, which is the vision for this school. The curriculum fulfils the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum and includes rich learning experiences, ensuring the children understand local, national and global issues relevant to their age and stage of development.
A love of the great outdoors is nurtured in forest school sessions in local woodland every week and the children also have access to their very own ‘trim trail’ in the school grounds. They enjoy PE lessons at school, in their sports field and they also use village resources such as the tennis courts. At school, there is climbing apparatus, some wonderful playground equipment and great classroom resources.
St John’s can be very proud of its Ofsted 2023 rating of ‘Good’ in all areas with a parents' view survey where 100% of parents ‘would recommend the school’, as well as a SIAMS 2023 rating of ‘Excellent.’
The school gets involved in many village activities and is proud of its close links with the community, who particularly enjoy the country dancing display put on by the year two pupils every year for the village fete. As a church school, there are close links with St John’s Parish Church and the resident minister Helen Hancock comes into school to take assemblies on a regular basis, working closely with Headteacher Marion Stevens to ensure that church and school have a meaningful and happy relationship.
Partnership with parents is fundamental to ensuring that school staff know the "whole child" and helps ensure that their education is rich and meaningful. Parents are invited to many activities held in the school and there is an active Parent Teacher Association (PTA) where everyone is welcome. There are also Parents’ Evenings every term when children's work can be viewed and progress discussed with their teacher.
St John's School pupils entertain visitors to the village fete with their country dancing display.
