Environment

The environment portfolio covers both the built environment and the natural environment. Built environment matters in which the environment committee represent residents have recently included:

  • Farnborough Airport airspace changes and airport expansion

  • Churt Pumping Station overflows and burst rising mains

  • Footbridge collapses

  • Road safety and speed issues

  • Installation of full fibre broadband infrastructure

  • Waverley and Surrey County Council environmental consultations and surveys on rights of way

Much of our attention focuses on the natural environment where we manage Churt’s own wood, called Wicket Wood and champion the reduction of carbon emissions and the increase of biodiversity.

In 2020, Churt Parish Council confirmed its environmental charter and launched the ‘Net Zero for Churt’ project.

Wicket Wood

In Churt, we live in an area endowed with an abundance of natural capital assets and an environmental heritage which is a treasure that we want our children and future generations to continue to enjoy. Churt Parish Council (CPC)(CPC) recognises that the time for more decisive action to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and to support increased biodiversity in the interests of sustainability, economic, social, and health benefit is NOW. In support of achievement of these targets, we will:-

  1. Hardwire the consideration of climate change and sustainability into all CPC decision making, including those which affect our own purchases and activities, as well as in commenting on planning applications. We will give weight to consideration of energy (the whole energy system of energy, transport, waste), carbon emissions and impact on the natural environment.

  2. Work with Surrey County Council, Waverley Borough Council and local partners to facilitate and implement their climate emergency action plans where appropriate for our parish.

  3. Work with the Surrey Nature Partnership, Surrey Wildlife Trust, the Environment Agency and local organisations to monitor local natural assets, to conserve and increase biodiversity.

  4. Work through Churt Environment Working Group of local residents (CHEWG) to encourage and where feasible support local households and businesses to reduce their carbon emissions and improve biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
