1st Churt Scouts

The scouting movement has been alive in Churt for more than a hundred years. The earliest photo known is the 1st Churt Scouts ‘Owl’ patrol on camp near Poole in 1935.

The Scout Association provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for young people aged 6-25 and has a vision that “By 2025 we will have prepared more young people with skills for life, supported by amazing volunteers that deliver an inspiring programme. We will be growing, more inclusive, shaped by young people and making a bigger impact in our communities.”

Scouts actively engages and supports young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society. Personal development means promoting the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well being of the individual, helping them achieve their full potential. At 1st Churt the skills that our young people are gaining are preparing them for life and helping them to develop into better citizens for the future. They learn to look after themselves, others and their environment, to lead and to be a part of a team, to care, to be tolerant, responsible, courageous and loyal.

Scouting comes in three sections open to both boys and girls and split by age group:

Beavers (6-8 years): Beaver Scouts is the start of the journey for children in Churt in Scouting. We have a very active colony so please contact us if you would like to know more. Beavers follow a fun packed programme leading towards recognised Challenge Awards and activity badges.

If your child is interested in the Beavers in Churt, please email: churtbeavers@gmail.com

Cubs (8-10½ years): The Cub pack continues to thrive and grow in strength. Activities and highlights over the year include a District camp and a Group camp, backwoods cooking, firelighting, pioneering, cooking a Master Chef meal, kayaking, archery, biodiversity improvement and conservation activities on the common and elsewhere, carol singing to the elderly, competing in the District Muir Trophy and the Supreme Box Kart Championship and lots more.

If your child is interested in the Cubs in Churt, please email: suestyles@live.co.uk

Scouts (10½ -14 years): The Scout Troop is the first stage in scouting where children are encouraged to develop leadership skills by planning some of their own activities and having more involvement in the actual delivery of the programme. Hiking, community support, camping and pioneering are all key activities.

If your child is interested in Scouting in Churt, please email: churtscoutgroup@gmail.com

Subscriptions: are currently £51 per term for Cubs and Scouts and £48 for Beavers, but we also have a policy that no child should be excluded from scouting for financial reasons. (Enquire with any member of our leadership team).

Volunteering: As a growing Scout Group, we are always looking for additions to our leadership and executive teams. Please call Scouts Chairperson Neil Rush on 07720 289400 for details of current volunteering opportunities. We are especially looking for Beaver Leaders, a Group Scout Leader and a new Secretary.

Priority of admission: Due to the success of the Group and the Scouting movement as a whole, we are running waiting lists at most levels of entry. While there is always some flexibility for special cases, generally the order of priority for entry is: children whose parents will volunteer to be a leader, existing members of the Group moving up between sections, siblings, Churt residents, pupils at St Johns School and finally others with a link to the village.
